1940-50's Connecticut Light & Power Fiberglass Lineman's Hard Hat
!
Connecticut Light and Power (CL&P)'s roots date back to 1905 when lawyer J. Henry Roraback lobbied the State Legislature, chartering the Rocky River Power Co. Securing financial backing from the United Gas and Improvement Co. (UGI) in 1917, the Rocky River Power Company purchased all franchises, leases, and properties of the Housatonic Power Co, the United Electric Light and Power Co., and the Seymour Electric Light Co. The combined companies became the Connecticut Light and Power Co. and by 1918 had established themselves as the second largest utility in Connecticut. Through aggressive expansion CL&P became the leading utility in Connecticut by 1927. When the federal government forced UGI to divest CL&P became an independent company in 1941. 1966 marked the creation of Northwest Utilities consolidating CL&P, Hartford Electric Light Company and Western Massachusetts Co. In 2015 the company and all of its subsidiaries re-branded themselves as "Eversource Energy."
This great circa 1940-50's linesman "hard" hat is a size 7¼. It has all of its original internal webbing and is made of early construction fiberglass.
Glass fibers have been used for centuries, but the earliest US patient documentation was awarded to Prussian inventor Hermann Hammesfahr (1845-1914) in 1880. Mass production of glass strands was "accidentally" discovered in 1932 when Owens-Illinois researcher Games Stayler directed a jet of compressed air at a stream of molten glass producing fibers. Joining with Corning company, Owens-Corning used this method to produce its patented "Fiberglas" in 1936. In the same year Du Pont developed a suitable resin for combining fiberglass with a plastic to produce a composite material. The first generation of modern polyester resins used with fiberglass was Cyanamid's resin of 1942. The composite material showed great strength with a potential for use as a structural material, stronger than many metals by weight, non-magnetic, non-conductive, and transparent to electromagnetic radiation. Ideal for use in making helmets for the linemen of electric companies.
