Description
I found this very interesting embossed clear bottle and was attracted to it because it was still in the original box. The box is in pretty bad shape but the information is readable if you read English, German or what I believe is Swedish or Danish. It seems to be a liquid remedy for constipation and troubles resulting from constipation: Adults are to take one tablespoonful before or after breakfast and before retiring. On one side of the box it states that such medicine was first prepared in 1780 by the Swiss-American herbalist Peter Fahrney, an enthusiastic student of nature. His old herb-books are still in existence with notations made in his own handwriting. His skill as a physician made him widely known through-out the settlements of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia.--or so the box says. He passed his knowledge down to his son and then down to his son. Eventually one of the Fahrneys took a special course at the Philadelphia college of Pharmacy. One of the descendants moved to Chicago in 1869. In 1889 Dr. Peter Fahrney took his four sons into the Chicago-based business...and to meet Canadian demands, a center was opened in Winnipeg. This tattered old box with all the information is a real treasure. It has a very old corrugated cardboard liner, which I will include along with any separate bits and pieces. The clear bottle is 9 inches high with sloping shoulders and four flat vertical sides. On one side is embossed: The Reliable Old-Time Preparation For Home Use. On the opposite flat side is embossed: Prepared by Dr. Peter Fahrney & sons Co., Chicago, Ill. U.S.A. On the bottom is embossed: Fahrney 9 3 12 Chicago.
The green metal cap twists off and on easily. It is a tad over an inch in diameter. In the center are some herb leaves. Around the circumference: Dr. Peter Fahrney & Sons Co., Chicago...and two small words: Trade Mark.
I'll mail this fragile box and the sturdy bottle to anywhere in the USA via Priority for ,50, which will give us tracking and insurance. If you happen to live close to Minneapolis, we can explore a cheaper way to send. I welcome ideas and suggestions.
