RARE 1800s "BENJAMIN'S JAMAICAN POMADE, KINGSTON, JA" GLASS BOTTLE, EMBOSSED

$ 68.11

Availability: 40 in stock
  • Maker: Benjamin's or Benjamins
  • Color: Clear
  • Time Period Manufactured: Pre-1930
  • Condition: Please see photos. This is an OLD bottle. It's in very nice condition for an old bottle. There are a couple TINY spots on the foot where my fingernail catches. There are also a couple places where a small bubble may have broken or some sand left a rough spot in the glass? The top is smooth. There's one spot where a bubble is close to the rim so it may look like a chip in the photos, but it's not. Lettering is nice.

    Description

    Hi Collectors.
    I learned that P.A. Benjamin was a druggist for the Jamaican workers on the Panama Canal in the early days. (construction started in 1881).  I believe this bottle is from the late 1800s, but I'm not an expert so please do your own research.
    This bottle is just under 3 inches tall.  The top lettering is arched "BENJAMIN'S" (I think I see an apostrophe, but it could be a mark in the glass.  I tried in one of the last photos to show it up close so you can decide).  The next line is "JAMAICAN", straight across.  The third line is "POMADE" in larger letters and straight across.  The last line is "KINGSTON, JA", also straight across.
    There is no writing on the back of the bottle or the bottom.
    The bottle has 2 seams, one on each side.  As you can see by the photo with the light purple post-it, the seam is interrupted where the top of the bottle is.  I'm not sure if the top was applied or if the maker smushed the bottle neck down to make it or what - again, you can see I'm no expert!
    The bottle is very clean inside, doesn't look like it was dug, burned or battered!
    Forgive me if the price is out of line, I had a hard time because I found no others like it, so I've compared with other druggist bottles.  I'm sure you'll let me know if it's nuts by way of bidding, so the price will come down now and then if need be.
    I usually ship within a day of receiving payment.  I expect to be paid within 2 days of auction's close.  If no payment by day 3 ebay will open an unpaid item case.
    Thanks for looking.  SH-1297
