Description
Here we have an
Antique "Unmarked' 1800'sTraveling Medical Doctor's 8-Bottle 'Leather-Covered' Apothecary Small Chest.
This small chest is not marked by the maker. However, the 2 largest bottles are marked on the bottom W. T. CO. (The Whitall Tatum Company or Whitall Tatum was one of the first glass factories in the United States. Located in Millville, New Jersey, it was in operation from 1806 through 1938.)
The chest appears to be made of a light-weight wood and has a thin leather covering. It has a good snap closure. The chest and its contents are in good condition considering the approx. 180 years of wear that this chest has seen. The leather is cracking where the flexible lid bends (see pics). The compartmentalized chest holds 8 glass bottles (2 large and 6 small) with metal screw-on caps. About half of the caps have thin cork liners. All of the neck thread are in good condition. The bottles with caps are approx. 3-1/2" Tall. Some of the bottles have small air bubbles in the glass. There are no bottle labels. The chest measures approx. 7"L x 2"W x 3-7/8"H.
Good Antique Small Chest for a CIVIL WAR or pharmaceutical display !!
