This listings is for a genuine and original WWII German Army Sterbebild.
Sterbebild are also known as Funeral Cards or Death Notices.
The vast majority of Germans in World War II were Catholics.
Like many funeral services today, a small card (usually baseball card size) were printed with a photo and brief history of the deceased.
This custom has existed for several centuries and was very prevalent during the Second World War.
These particular card was printed in remembrance of:
The Prechtl brothers, Anton and Karl.
Anton
Prechtl
served in an Elite Unit and also the German Police and held the rank of Scharfuhrer and Wachtmeister - both are Sergeants ranks.
He fell on October 4, 1944 during a bombing raid.
Karl Prechtl served as a Petty Officer in the German Navy.
He fell on July 23, 1943 south of the Azores in the North
Atlantic
when the U-Boat he was on, U-613 was sunk by depth charges launched from the U.S. Destroyer George E. Badger.
All 48 crew were lost.
This card would be a great addition to a collection.
