  • Condition: EXCEPTIONALLY RARE MONUMENTAL AND IMPORTANT MATCHED PAIR OF HUGE ETCHED GLASS APOTHECARY PHARMACY SHOW GLOBES IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THESE GLOBES WERE MOST LIKELY MADE MY THE HOUSE OF VAN SCHAACK CIRCA LATE 1800S. THEY ARE THE HARDER TO FIND TRAPEZOIDAL SHAPE AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE PICS, AND ARE ELABORATELY ORNMANENTED WITH ETCHED DESIGNS OF FLOWERSS AND LEAVES. THEY ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH NO DAMAGE OR REPAIRS. SOME INNER NECK ROUGHNESS FROM USE EVIDENT, BT VERY MINOR. INCREDIBLY CLEAN AND JUST BEAUTIFUL! THE PHOTOS OBVIOUSLY WERE TAKEN WIOTH THE GLOBES EMPTY, I MAY OPT TO FILL THEM WITH COLORED LIQUID (OR NOT) AND ALSO NOTE THAT THE WEIGHT OF THE COMPONENTS WHEN THEY ARE FILLED ADDS A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF STABILITY TO THE PIECE...ONCE FILLED THE ELEMENTS HAVE VERY LITTLE 'GIVE' SA THE LIQUID TIGHTENS THE PIECE TOGETHER. THE JARS ARE HAND BLOWN GLASS AND HAND ETCHED, AND EACH MEASURES ABOUT 44 INCHES HIGH (NEARLY FOUR FEET!). YOU MAY NEVER SEE ANOTHER SET LIKE THIS.

    THEY ARE SPECTACULAR!
Throughout history, professionals have searched for recognizable signs and symbols to represent their occupation.  These symbols serve not only to call attention to businesses, specifically in times of low literacy, but also to distinguish a career field among the rest.  Much like the mortar and pestle as a sign of apothecaries, show globes, glass vessels of varying sizes and shapes, hold a significant and intriguing history as a symbol of early pharmacists.  Although there are many myths surrounding their origins, little is known about these glass globes; their appearance in early British and American pharmacy shop fronts and catalogs demonstrates their distinct place within the community.
Although much mystery surrounds the origins and uses of these intricate vessels, it is certain that show globes have an interesting history and place within the pharmacy profession.  While their use has dwindled over the years, pharmacy historians and enthusiasts worldwide continue to collect these works of art.
Most items are photographed in natural outdoor sunlight when possible. As such any dark areas in the images are shadows or shady areas unless otherwise stipulated.

A NOTE ABOUT FEEDBACK AND THE DETAILED SELLER RATING SYSTEM: THIS SYSTEM IS GEARED TOWARD PROVIDING BUYERS WITH THE BEST POSSIBLE DEALING EXPERIENCE, WHICH I AS A SELLER CERTAINLY CONDONE. THE SYSTEM HOWEVER IS BIASED AND INACCURATE; ALTHOUGH A RATING OF 4 IS SAID TO BE GOOD; IN REALITY AN OVERALL SELLER RATING OF 4 WILL CAUSE THAT SELLERS ACCOUNT TO BE SUSPENDED. THEREFORE, I ASK THAT YOU PLEASE LEAVE 5'S IN ALL CATEGORIES FOR OUR TRANSACTIONS OR CONTACT ME TO PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU FELT WAS NOT 100% SATISFACTORY. WHILE MANY BUYERS ARE UNAWARE OF THIS, THE DSR RATING AFFECTS SUCH SELLER ASPECTS AS HOW THE LISTINGS ARE PRESENTED, OUR ABILITY TO LIST ITEMS AT ALL; OUR FEE SCHEDULE FOR LISTING ITEMS, AND OTHER SUCH FACTORS. IT MAY SEEM TRIVIAL TO THE BUYER, BUT TO US AS SELLERS IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. ALSO PLEASE NOTE THAT EBAY CHARGES FEES NOT ONLY ON THE SALE PRICE OF ITEMS BUT ALSO ON SHIPPING CHARGES, SO AS SUCH THE ACTUAL SHIPPING COSTS ON YOUR ITEM MAY SHOW AS A BIT LESS THAN THE CHARGES IN THE DESCRIPTION. THANK YOU. IMPORTANT NOTE: IN RECENT MONTHS BIDDERS HAVE BEGUN HOLDING OFF PLACEMENT OF ANY BIDS UNTIL NEAR AUCTION END. THIS PRESENTS A PROBLEM FOR US SELLERS AS THERE IS NO WAY TO PREDICT WHAT ITEMS MAY OR MAY NOT SELL. AS A RESULT I REGULARLY END AUCTIONS ON ITEMS THAT HAVE LITTLE OR NO BIDS SO AS TO OFFER THESE ITEMS AT LIVE ANTIQUE SHOWS AND FAIRS. AS SUCH, IF YOU HAVE SINCERE INTEREST IN ONE OF MY AUCTION FORMAT LISTINGS THEN I STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT YOU PLACE AT LEAST A MINIMUM BID TO ENSURE THAT THIS ITEM WILL NOT BE PULLED FROM AUCTION WITHOUT WARNING. OTHERWISE, YOU MAY WELL BE DISAPPOINTED LATER WHEN YOU DO DECIDE TO ENTER A BID ONLY TO FIND THAT THE AUCTION HAS CLOSED AND THAT THE ITEM IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE.
